Samuel Davis Sturgis (born June 11, 1822, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania – died September 28, 1889, St. Paul, Minnesota) was a senior officer of the United States Army. A veteran of the Mexican War, Civil War, and Indian Wars, he attained the rank of brevet major general. The city of Sturgis, South Dakota, is named for Samuel D. Sturgis.
